Secret Happiness - Facebook Birthdays

This year was definitely a 2010 birthday! Real life and technology all intermingling to create a festive occasion.

My sister called in the morning and my nieces and nephews sang "Happy Birthday - cha, cha, cha" to me to start the morning. Thank you RaeAnna!

And, while talking to her I arrived at work to a small group of people near the door singing "Happy Birthday" in parts with beautiful harmonizing. Wow. We have quite the singers hidden in the e-learning development world.

I got three cards in the mail - one from my parents, one from my financial guy (my brother) and one from my life insurance policy guy (hoping that I don't die soon and keep paying my dues).

I got an awesome Edible Arrangement from my sister (thank you Renaye) and some clothing that I picked out while on a trip near the Eddie Bauer Outlet (thank you parents).

My special person got me a cake, a gift and I had a great dinner with a couple in our neighborhood.

And...on Facebook over 50 people wished me happy birthday.

Yes, it takes two seconds for someone to post "Happy Birthday" on your wall. But, the fact that they take a moment to do it brings loads of little happinesses and I took a few seconds to think about each person as I read the remarks.

The world of birthdays is different as we get older, and as technology connects us to more of our loved ones. In my world, there are less material gifts and that is OK. Luckily, the communications in the online world have created a way to feel acknowledged or remembered throughout the day.

So, though Facebook gets knocked all over the place, Facebook birthdays bring lots of high self-esteem moments on days where some of us face the reality of just how old we really are.

Now, for my other secret happiness - someone brought donuts to work today. So, since it is the day after my birthday I am allowed to have them. (-:
