Christmas Moments 2010

Though my parents now have 19 grand children and counting, there were none for Christmas...at least not by the time I got home.

Just a couple of brothers, my parents and my man. Very small for a family of our size.

But, it was fun to be with family for a few days.
Dad reading one of the MANY books given as gifts.

Brett LOVES Christmas and ensures we celebrate it moment by moment from 24th through 25th.

We played Boggle in honor of Scot since he wasn't there to celebrate.

Played whatever this game is for 10 rounds.

Wore Vicks filled vapor tissues to protect us from some family members that can't control their personal smells.

Admired the newly renovated kitchen - that still needs a bright area rug to add color!

Dad's head becomes an ornament holder, but he is apparently used to these antics because the game rolls on.

Great gifts - like this colorful laptop bag.

Rebecker attempts usage of someone elses gift. I've got a ways to go!

Craig, can't let a day go by without researching financials.

A bit tired and worn, but Mom and Rebecca capture a shot.

Documenting Christmas ornaments that have been around since I was a little girl.

Little Brett is home

Well, he isn't "little," but my youngest brother just got home from a two year mission for our church.

Brett was born when I was finishing up my senior year of high school (I'm the oldest) and so there is an 18 year difference between us.

I drove over to Columbus, Ohio to see him, my sister and children and parents. It's great to have these little meet ups in random cities where none of us live. The visits are short, but fun. And, I get to spend money on $80 speeding tickets to further expand the cost of my trip. The joy of being a lead foot! Though, I will admit, that I am a very fast driver and I should be getting tickets all the time instead of every five years.

It was good to take a mini road trip and see family. It reminds me of the "I need to do this more often" that I often forget when I get too focused on work and other unimportant minutia.

Welcome home Brett!

Between the colors, the kids, and the John C. Freemont poses to block out the sun...this is a pretty fun picture.

Bald Men vs. Bald Babies

Bald men can complain all they want. I think bald babies have it worse. Who goes around putting bows on the bald heads of grown ups?

Even so, it makes for fun pictures.

Happy 40th Anniversary Dad and Mom!

Today is my parents 4oth anniversary. Wow. I feel like I can still remember when my grandparents had their 40th, but maybe that was their 50th. Either way, time flies and I'm sure for them it has seemed even faster.

We sent them a MyPublisher book full of pictures from their college years, marriage, and through our 2005 family reunion.

Thought I'd share a few:

Memory Lane - Pajama Times

A few days ago my friend Pam blogged about those comfortable footie pajamas that most of us had at least one pair of when we were little. I loved those and need to look into buying a pair that fits a 6 foot lady!

(First photo: representation of most pajama types)

Since I like to multi-task, I looked through all the scanned family pictures tonight as I listened to our church Christmas devotional. Kind of nice to have festive holiday music blaring while you look through the photos of life.

I was surprised at the number of pajama pictures! You would think we wore them all day, but maybe it's because they seemed to be THE gift at Christmas time.

We didn't settle for one type of pajamas. We had the footsies, the two-piece, the nightgown and even a few night-robes to wear over our pajamas to keep us warm around the house. Looking back it is probably because our parents were always turning down the heat to save money.

Here's proof that the boys all had the footsie pajamas.

It looks like I had the footie pajamas at 8-9 years old and RaeLyn (far right) is wearing something that was flannel and homemade. We always seemed to have the homemade pajamas and though we liked those, it was fun to get "store bought" pajamas at times. I always thought it was "interesting" that Santa could bring homemade pajamas, but I kept my mouth shut since I am, after all, the oldest.

Sometimes we would add a little flair to the pjs, like red cowboy boots or a fancy little bear coat.

Dad and Brett playing some sort of game and Mom holding someone (possibly Brett) in the late 80s proving these were still around.

The most beautiful little picture of Renaye in her pajamas ...or perhaps a pair of mine that she dressed up in?

Memory Lane - shirtless brothers?

Warning! Shirtless brothers.

A few years ago I scanned about 50 family photo albums and about 20 slide trays into the computer. All of those pictures were fairly normal. They covered the 1800s through until about they year 2000. These were the growing up years of the four girls (oldest) and the younger years of my four brothers. It was also before digital cameras.

Now, I've secured a whole slew of pictures from my parent's computers that were taken over the last 9-10 years. I've been uploading them to Picasa so we can share all our photographs.

Interesting stuff. Lots of pictures of trips, of relatives, of flowers, of house remodeling and all of my brothers taking turns posing for the camera. Yes, that's right. We always think women are spending all the time in front of the mirror, but I'm fairly sure that I have evidence that this is not so. There are hundreds of pictures of boys flexing their muscles, boys posing in the mirror sucking in their cheeks to make their cheekbones look more defined and hundreds of pictures of partial haircuts and beard growth/beard shavings. To me they are basically all one in the same. We might as well save 5-6 of the pictures and that covers them all. But, alas, each has significant meaning that only people who know will know.

Don't believe me? Proof below:

Like I said - hundreds of these throughout all of the digital folders.

I mean, how else would we know that Brett used TWO shavers to get his head ready for a swim meet?

Very important historical documentation.

Parents visit Washington

My parents came to visit and we had a great time! On Friday evening we went out to the Old Country Buffet, their favorite restaurant of the year, and ate the "healthy" food on the menu as well as from a selection of basic desserts. Through their extensive market research, my parents have stated that the Ohio chain is far superior to the food offerings provided in the Virginia chain AND at a fraction of the cost. Yes, this is the east coast - you pay more, get less and skimp on the customer service just to ensure you have an inferior experience.

We came home and I suggested we watch Pride and Prejudice - the BBC version. I just told my parents it was a "little long." Ha. Well, it was apparently engaging enough that we watched the entire thing. That's six hours in front of the tv! This would never have been allowed at my house growing up, but things change when parents are too tired to worry about these details and their youngest child is 19 years old. Well, and it is Pride and Prejudice.

Saturday morning was a little drippy outside thanks to Hurricane Hanna and after realizing all of our umbrellas were in the cars, we headed toward the city and actually found a parking spot right by the Library of Congress main building. I love the architecture in DC. It looks amazing from the outside. However, when you get in the building (on the bottom level) and are routed by the information desk to get a library card, you get to see an entirely different side to the exterior grandosity. We had to follow all of these underground walk ways to some abscure place to get our Library of Congress library card. The cards are intended for use, and not as a souvenor. As usual, how are they going to know? We filled out paperwork and got our picture taken before winding our way through the tunnels to another obscure room where my father asked for some help and my mom and I just checked out a poster on the wall containing the tartan plaids of different families as well as the shields for different clans. Interesting stuff.

And, down yet another winding hall to a larger place were my father requested the book he needed and waited for it's delivery to our seat number. We had to get pictures to show that we were there. I read the latest version of "What Color is your parachute?" while my mother found a real estate book and started taking notes and making calculations. My parents are quite the researchers and I'm amazed that we didn't sit there all day. So many libraries are becoming so advanced that they've lost that authentic feel and the old book smell, but this place felt the way you would want a library to feel. Quiet, a little musty, big tables and your own personal lamp.

Of course, we were able to go to the main public part of the Library of Congress as well and see the Thomas Jefferson library and stand in awe of the intricate ceiling and solid marble surrounding us.

We drove home in the pouring rain and to my parents secret happiness, the BYU game was available on my tv.

My mother gets a little excited about sports. I must mention that during this time my parents kept dropping food and popcorn around my house. Goodness. I finally had to say "children, what is going on!" You don't expect to have to clean up messes made by your parents! Especially my parents who are always cleaning, re-arranging, organizing, clean, etc.

On Sunday we did the usual - church, eat, talk - and then went on a walk out in one of the Manassas Battlefields and came back and watched the Les Miserables movie.

Good weekend with my parents. Too bad we didn't have more time, but there is always more to see on another trip.
