In Memory of - Memorial Day

Living in this region, it is impossible not to spend a few moments remembering those who fought in wars past and present. Even though I'm almost 20 miles away from the Pentagon, the motorcycles have been a regular part of traffic these past few days. It is inspiring to watch so many devoted vets and vet supporters making the trek to this area over this weekend. Over 500,000 of them this year.
On the news this evening, I saw a man in a bamboo cage. It was the exact same man I took a picture of in 2005 when I went down to the Pentagon parking lot to watch the motorcycles accumulate for the famous "Roll of Thunder" ride through Washington, DC. These people come every year and long term friendships form as they swap stories and show support for each other.
I'm a bit removed from these things. Though I have more uncles, aunts, cousins and siblings than most, very few have enrolled in the military. In fact, I'm trying to even think of one. Hmmm. Can't think of one. Ok, upon further thought, my father was in the Navy for a short while and an uncle or two participated in short stints as well. Other than that, not a lot of uniforms.

Here's a little salute to those that are! And, regardless of our status, let's take time a little time to be grateful for the freedoms we enjoy...and keep them alive.

Happy, or at least, a memorable Memorial Day!Posted by Picasa

Amen to that. You are so on the ball RC1. James and I went to visit all the graves of our family members who have passed on. I felt quite a spiritual somberness at the gravesides. James had a baby sister of six months that passed on and a cousin of his had a baby pass away last year 14 days after Memorial day. I went home and bawled for a few minutes and held my baby close. I couldn't help but remember Grammy and Grampy, my mother and Grandmother whose graves I do not remember seeing. The resurrection will be a very happy event.
