Random stuff from the past week

So, after a long day of working (yes, today is Saturday and I had to catch up) I figured I should do something personal and so I'm writing a blogpost.

The only problem is this - I cannot remember what in the world I did this entire week except work. So, I'm resorting to whatever pictures I took off my camera a few days ago.

Highlights from the week include, because I suddenly remembered as I was loading photos:

  • HEAT - Really hot, muggy and soul sucking ....but, you didn't know it until after it happened. We were over 100 many days and apparently it had the impact of 120 degree weather on some of them. I love humidity, but must have locked my knees talking/videotaping a neighbor and almost collapsed on the steps. Yikes!
  • Pentagon Visit - Had a meeting at the Pentagon for the first time in a couple of years. Wow, the new renovations aren't that amazing, but did you know that they have a Best Buy now? Inside the Pentagon? They do have fast food places and other shops, but for some reason the Best Buy threw me off. As well as the broken escalator going UP on one of the days of blasting heat. I felt like I was supposed to become part of special forces or something. If they need some good walkers and endurance swimmers...I would probably apply. Oh wait, I'm not of age. (-:
  • Mobile - I've been immersed in all things mobile lately for work. So, if you have any great ideas feel free to send them my way. I'm leading up our mobile initiative with a special focus on mobile learning. iPads, Galaxy pads, etc. are changing the learning game. Pretty cool.
  • Captain America - apparently it was pretty good. I sent my husband off to it by himself so that I could do the all things mobile (see above) work I needed to get done. Sometimes I get so bored knowing how the movie ends through the previews.
  • Oatmeal Cookies - the cure for using food storage that is out of date is to make multiple batches of cookies. Ok, but don't cook them all. Just freeze the dough after one tray goes in the oven. This is how to handle cookie addiction, right? Too high of a level of effort to cook the next batch to make it worth the regular sneaking.

Contrary to the look of this picture - I am not 9 feet tall. This picture proves that I did go to the pool to swim laps and the piles behind me indicate that I did some de-junking and have to run to the Goodwill. Yea!

My personal/work friend got married and had a second reception down at the chapel grounds near Mt. Vernon. Congrat to Andrea!

Loved Andrea's dress. Had a unique flair to it.

In Memory Of...

Today was the first time that I visited the Pentagon Memorial. The memorial  for those that died in the plane and in the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

This memorial actually applies to me more than any memorial on the National Mall....

I lived through that day. I would have been in that spot if I hadn't delayed my morning walk to watch the breaking news about the towers getting hit by terrorists.

The same chills go up my back as they did that day. That morning I had the distinct impression that I would remember that day the rest of my life. And, I have.

In the days and weeks (and perhaps months) afterwards, I experienced what post-traumatic stress is and appreciate how deeply it can effect people that go through multiple "September 11th experiences" in their lives.

To this day, I still pause at almost every airplane that flies over my head...especially when I'm watching near the Pentagon or National Mall.

Today I had a special moment...

In the rows of what can only be referred to as benches, I found the bench of Brady Kay Howell. He was a member of our congregation at church. He lived in the same apartment complex (Riverhouse). As saw him swimming with his wife at the pool just a few weeks before and only knew them through a few salutations.

However, Brady worked in the Pentagon and on that day he didn't come home. And, not the next day and not the next.

It was assumed he was one of the victims and his wife began that process of moving forward with arrangements as family and friends poured into town to share in grief.

I sat at Brady's apartment for an afternoon answering calls from the press and reflecting on life. Right after I left the apartment, officials came bearing something that was identified as belonging to Brady.

He had died in the crash/attack.

Some people at the Pentagon had left meetings briefly for a restroom break or to run and errand. Those that stayed were killed. Or, some were in that wing only for a brief moment for a special task and were just in the wrong place at the wrong moment.

Brady had been in an email trail in the hour before with a friend in the congregation. Conversation back and forth through email and then boom - life ended.

When I came up on Brady's bench I suddenly started to cry. A very small cry, but it was a relief. I was here in that spot where it all happened. I had seen it from my 12th story window...at least within a few seconds. I had no idea at that time that anyone had died.

I can't even remember the weeks after it - flags everywhere, re-telling stories, trying to remember what I saw, walking over to the Pentagon every few days to get as close as they would allow, creating conspiracy theories, watching planes moving in missing man formations fly over Arlington cemetery, everyone pausing to watch each airplane that took off from Reagan National Airport...

It is sad that I knew people that were influenced by what happened that day, but it is one memorial where I can walk up to a bench and see the name of someone that lived by me, worshipped in the same place that I did, and ... where I personally sat in the apartment of the person while awaiting to hear the final word on his life on this earth.

It is a humbling experience and I feel gratitude for having yet another day to change, grow, and progress.

In Memory of - Memorial Day

Living in this region, it is impossible not to spend a few moments remembering those who fought in wars past and present. Even though I'm almost 20 miles away from the Pentagon, the motorcycles have been a regular part of traffic these past few days. It is inspiring to watch so many devoted vets and vet supporters making the trek to this area over this weekend. Over 500,000 of them this year.
On the news this evening, I saw a man in a bamboo cage. It was the exact same man I took a picture of in 2005 when I went down to the Pentagon parking lot to watch the motorcycles accumulate for the famous "Roll of Thunder" ride through Washington, DC. These people come every year and long term friendships form as they swap stories and show support for each other.
I'm a bit removed from these things. Though I have more uncles, aunts, cousins and siblings than most, very few have enrolled in the military. In fact, I'm trying to even think of one. Hmmm. Can't think of one. Ok, upon further thought, my father was in the Navy for a short while and an uncle or two participated in short stints as well. Other than that, not a lot of uniforms.

Here's a little salute to those that are! And, regardless of our status, let's take time a little time to be grateful for the freedoms we enjoy...and keep them alive.

Happy, or at least, a memorable Memorial Day!Posted by Picasa
