Tonight I spoke to a little niece on the phone. She is six years old. Though I was shopping, the conversation was so interesting I decided to stop and take notes on my iPhone.
Here's parts of the conversation:
Me - How do you like school?
Niece - I like it, but they don't give me enough homework.
Me - You want more homework?
Niece - Yes.
Me - Why?
Niece - I want to be smart. If I get a lot of homework this year, I will be smart. Then the 1st grade will be easy.
Me - Oh, wow.
Pause
Me - What do you study? Do you study math?
Niece - Yes, but I only know 2 + 2. It equals 4. But, I also know one of the hard ones. 7 +7 = 14. But, that is the only hard one. I still need to find out the really hard one that is 8 + 7.
Me - I know what that equals. That equals 15.
Niece - 16?
Me - No, 15. 8 + 7 = 15. See, now you can tell everyone that you know 8 + 7.
Niece - Oh. No, I won't tell everyone. I might not share sometimes. Sometimes I keep secrets. Sometimes if I share the answer people will go to the other side of the playground. I don't know why.
Me - Oh.
Pause.
Niece - What is that noise?
Me - I'm at the store.
Niece - Are you buying licorice?
Me - No, I'm trying to healthy.
Niece - Grandpa and Grandma have licorice in their car. I can see it in the window. I am outside with Grandma's phone so it is quiet.
Me - So, are you doing any fun activities with them?
Niece - No, we never have any fun activities here. There is just baseball (?) here. I don't even get to do any crafts ever, but I do have my own little scissors. I also have my own little art box.
Me - Well, you should play with those.
Niece - Oh, people are coming outside now and we need to go eat dinner.
Phone turned over to Grandma.
Fun little conversations. It's nice when these little people are talkers. Sometimes I get the silent ones on the phone and I end up at a loss of words rather quickly.

Oh wow! When did Lizzie grow up? What a sweetheart. And she is turning into a pretty little girl.
It is so nice to finally see a picture of one of Jon and RaeAnna's (I think that is Elizabeth, right?) cute children. Where are they? What are they doing? Why aren't they into blogging and Facebook? Tell them hello for me! I think of them often!
Are you buying licorice? That is the best question ever!
Considering my prior addiction to licorice, it is funny she asked it though it was more triggered by the visual cue from the car. Still funny though.
This was a fun post and makes me realize I should be better at writing down some of the conversations I have with my own children. You should definitely make sure she has a copy of that for when she is older. That will be a fun look back at her life.
That was adorable. :-) And we must be related.. we are at times addicted to licorice. It's sad really.
